I’m extremely late on posting our little DIY Narwhal Valentine’s box. But it was way too cute not to share, so better late than never, right? Isla started preschool this year and we’ve been having so much fun with all her little class parties. When her teacher announced that they would need to bring something to put their valentines day cards in, I just knew we had to make something special.
I really considered just going to Target and buying the little mailbox card holder but my inner mom was just bursting to make her something she would love. My mom would always make me the most amazing things as a child and that’s the kind of memories I want to create for Isla also. Isla has been obsessed lately with Narwhals but I couldn’t find much having to do with Valentine’s day. I knew I needed to bring out my creativity to make something awesome.
For the Narwhal box you will need:
- A brown box with a removable lid
- Blue and brown paint
- A paintbrush
- Various colored scrapbook paper for the sprinkles and Ice cream cone
- Black, Pink, White and Blue foam sheets.
First I painted the entire box excluding the lid light blue.
You can also paint the bottom but isn’t necessary.
I let that dry. Then painted stripes on the gold scrapbook paper to give it a “waffle cone” look.
Now this step it totally up to you. I used pink paint to paint around the hole I cut to fit the cards in. I did this to kinda blend in the box with the pink foam.
Then I traced a circle with the lid onto the pink foam and cute and glued it down.
Then I made lots of sprinkles that I glued on the top. For these I just cut thin strips of paper and then cut small pieces from there.
Out of the pink foam I cut drops to make it look like ice cream that was melting.
Next out of the darker blue foam, I cut “waves” to make the sea.
For the eyes, I traced an image I saw that I thought would look cute.
When it was time to make the tail and fins I realized that I didn’t grab any light blue foam. I took the dark blue and just painted over it with the light blue paint. Because the foam is a little thick, I was able to put hot glue on it and glue it on. It held up really well.
and here’s the adorable finished Narwhal. He was a hit at Isla’s Valentine party.
